Today I conducted the pilot run of ‘The Art of Online Personal Branding” for 25 adult learners organised by CaliberLink


Located at Manulife Centre along Bras Basah Road, CaliberLink has been set up to strengthen employment facilitation for PMEs. It supports WDA’s wider mission to champion life-long learning and skills upgrading, particularly among PMEs. It will do so by performing three roles:

·         A Learning Gateway

CaliberLink aims to be at the frontier of lifelong learning and professional development for PMEs. It will tap on WDA’s network of over 40 CET centres to offer quality, industry-relevant learning pathways that suit PMEs’ interests. It will also assist human resource (HR) practitioners and training professionals to plan and develop customised learning development plans and programmes.

·         An Employment Exchange

CaliberLink will also seek, screen and refer suitable PME talents based on employers’ hiring needs. Furthermore, CaliberLink will provide opportunities for employers and PMEs to meet face-to-face through tailored and engaging activities, such as recruitment events and networking sessions.

·         A One-Stop Centre

CaliberLink provides a wide range of services for PMEs to discover and prepare for their next career or new employment. Examples of such services include training advisory, career coaching, career-search skills such as resume writing as well as workshops on career planning, visumes (video resumes) and grooming.

3 Tips you should action TODAY

Business is the concept of having value and then leveraging that value. To leverage means to magnify or multiply that value. Let me explain it in this very email. Here are 3 tips which you should action today (the value).

Go to your own search engine and do a historical search of what you have searched for recently. You will find it’s not straightforward. If you wanted a holiday in Thailand chances are you didn’t type ‘Thai holidays’. You are more likely to have searched something like: ‘Thai holiday packages Phuket’ or ‘Best deals in Phuket 5 star hotels’ The clue to SEO is to take statements that people use and focus on them. The right SEO person is worth gold and $ in your business. It’s time you were in tune with 2012 buying habits.
  2. Gone in 60 seconds. Great movie but in our world it’s not about cars. It’s about pitching you and your business. You have a maximum of 60 seconds to gain attraction and have people wanting to engage you and know more. It’s not the quantity of what you say. It’s not even what you do. In fact it’s why you do what you do. That’s what will create all the attraction for you. If you are going for a job, it’s why you do what you do as well. People are much more attracted to purpose than they are to great ideas.

I SUPPORT the Singapore Sports Council’s move to encourage succession planning in organisations (‘Outgoing shooting chief takes aim at Sports Council’; Sunday).

Some office bearers spend far too much time cementing their positions over a lengthy period, and for a variety of reasons.

They refuse to accept new ways of achieving goals, and spend inordinate amounts of energy shooting down good people who would otherwise be seen as ‘new blood’.

I find it ironic that some who have spoken up against the council’s rules are business people who do not seem to appreciate the value of succession planning. What’s more, the new rules do not forbid volunteers from continuing to serve in other ways on the committee, or elsewhere in the sport.

An example of good practice can be seen in the Asia Professional Speakers Singapore, an association I am active in.

Each president serves one term, and takes under his wing a vice-president who is shown the ropes and who builds his own network of people to carry on the work of the organisation the following year.

The underlying assumption is that all serving are successful people who have no time to play politics at the expense of the welfare of the members.

The vice-president still has to run for election at the end of the year, but few stand against him as he would have amassed significant goodwill and expertise. The outgoing president then serves on the exco as the immediate past president, with a much lesser role, together with some of the present exco members.

This develops a leadership culture acceptable to all, retains the expertise of some veterans, but allows the new leadership to press on with major tasks.

We still experience a ‘battle for ideas’ at times, but this is far removed from some of the despotic control some officers in Singapore associations have exercised.

If current incumbents cannot find suitable candidates, it speaks volumes about where their energy has been going instead.

If some think they are indispensable, they are probably legends in their own minds. The sooner this hubris ends, the better for sporting Singapore.
